(Courtesy of Buxton Advertiser)BUXTON'S bid to fly the flag for Britain in a prestigious European competition has been backed by the Duke of Devonshire. The Duke has accepted an invitation to become patron of Buxton in Bloom, alongside High Peak MP Tom Levitt, as it gathers support for the town's entry into Entente Florale, Europe's largest environmental competition. Buxton was nominated to represent Britain alongside the Scottish village of Forres after scooping a silver gilt award in last year's Britain in Bloom. But it must raise funds needed for the event, which will culminate in a two-day visit next July or August by 12 Entente Florale judges from across Europe. "We have been told that it could cost as much as £20,000 to enter, so we obviously need to generate as much support as possible," said Buxton in Bloom chair Jane McGrother. "To win the backing of the Duke and our MP at such an early stage is a huge step in the right direction." The Duke said he had been honoured by the invitation and was delighted to be able to offer his support. He added: "I am very excited that Buxton has been chosen to represent Great Britain in next year's Entente Florale competition. It is a great and well-deserved coup for the town and it's an exciting and worthwhile project." Mr Levitt said: "Many people already know what a wonderful place Buxton is, but the competition presents a unique opportunity to spread the message to an even wider audience. I am delighted to be involved." Jane said the campaign was off to a flying start, with many offers of help from local organisations and individuals. And a fundraising dinner, hosted by High Peak Mayor Cllr Robin Baldry and attended by the Duke, would take place in the Pavilion Gardens on March 14 with tickets priced at £25. Meanwhile, Jane is continuing her training for a sponsored swim in Buxton pool on January 12. She said: "I'm determined to do 50 lengths and so far I've raised around £100."
